Radioactive strontium ($$^{90}$$Sr) leaked into the ocean from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after the nuclear accident. Since the removal of Sr using general adsorbents is not efficient at high salinity, this study investigated removal of soluble Sr from a saline solution by biogenic carbonate minerals. An isolate, Bacillus sp. strain TK2d, from marine sediment removed more than 99 % of Sr in a saline solution. Sr adsorbed at the cell surface and then carbonate minerals containing Sr developed outside the cells.

Overflow of water from waste storage tanks of High Integrity Containers (HIC) in the multi-nuclide removal equipment (ALPS) was discovered at Fukushima Daiichi NPS in April of last year. The mechanism of overflow was not understood very much at that time. To elucidate that for chemical safety in the waste storage, irradiation experiments of simulated carbonate slurry by Co-60 $$gamma$$-rays have been conducted in CLADS, JAEA in cooperation with TEPCO, TOSHIBA and KURITA. Hydrogen molecule was the main radiolytic gas product in the slurry, and its amount was enhanced by dissolved species of not only halide ions as seawater components but also carbonate ion as an additive for co-precipitation at a basic condition. The bubbles of molecules were further formed and almost held in the slurry without stirred. These sequentially led to the expansion of slurry, and then to its separation into the shrunk one and supernatant water, which was little accumulated without irradiated.

A desk study has been carried out to establish the feasibility of measuring the oxidation state of plutonium under near-neutral strongly-reducing conditions. X-ray absorbance spectroscopy appears to be capable of establishing the oxidation state of plutonium sorbed on a suitable substrate. An experimental and modelling investigation has been performed to study the sorption of plutonium onto basalt, mudstone and sandstone under strongly-reducing conditions at three concentrations of carbonate. Appropriate synthetic rock-equilibrated de-ionised water and seawater were used. A model has been developed to describe the sorption of plutonium onto basalt, mudstone and sandstone in de-ionised water and seawater. Predicted R$$_{D}$$ values are generally in good agreement with the observed experimental measurements. The model is based on sorption of plutonium(III) species and assumes iron oxide is the dominant sorbing phase.

The chronological information about carbonates is useful for modeling and enables forecast of geological and geochemical environmental changes by simulating. The U-Th-Pb dating method for carbonates which were formed at reducing environment remain to be established. The final goal of our study is to establish in situ U-Th-Pb dating method for carbonates which are filling cracks in pervious rock like fault rocks. In this study, the U-Th-Pb elemental and isotopic two-dimension distribution for an ammonite fossil were visualized by "Imaging" method using Laser-ablation ICP Mass Spectrometry. In U-Pb isotope analysis for carbonates in cracks of granites, we could not obtain significant U-Pb age data by the lack of uranium and influence of non-radiogenic common lead. When the concentration of lead is sufficiently high for the measurement, we obtained reliable isotopic data from carbonates and their lead isotopic composition reflected characteristic composition of their origin water.

We conducted $$gamma$$ ray irradiation test using simulated carbonate slurry to obtain the basic knowledge of the cause of stagnant water over the High Integrity Container. We observed a rise in water level, air bubbles in the slurry, a supernatant when the carbonate slurry with 95 g/L density was irradiated by $$gamma$$ ray at 8.5 kGy/h. The cause of the rise in water level was regarded as the volume expansion by the gas retention in the carbonate slurry.

Chronological and geochemical studies of carbonates, which are commonly found as fracture filling minerals in rocks, can provide information about geochemical conditions present during formation including in deep subsurface environments. A dating technique for the carbonates using laser ablation-multiple collector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS) is still immature partly because of a lack of a consensus international carbonate standard for the in-situ dating technique. In this study, we performed a survey on the carbonate standard materials that may be suitable for high precision U-Th-Pb dating using LA-MC-ICPMS. We examined carbonate standard materials JCp-1 and JCt-1 issued by the Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ). Based on solution-based bulk analysis using MC-ICP-MS, heterogeneities in Pb isotope compositions were confirmed. Nevertheless, the 206Pb-based isotopic compositions were all within 1.2 per mill variations acceptable for a standard used for age determination using LA-MC-ICPMS. Additional tests on the heterogenities in U-Th-Pb compositions of the carbonate standards along with determinations of other trace elements using a 2D imaging LA-ICP-MS are ongoing. Examinations on both natural standards and synthetic standards are ongoing for further efforts in determination of the standard suitable for U-Th-Pb dating of carbonates.
